RUIN YESTERDAY.

From Samuel we roll on to another artist from the Heavyroc massive, the very lovely Alex Winston. With her debut single "Choice Notes" currently being readied for release next month, she's preceding it with a free compilation of covers next week, aptly titled The Basement Covers EP. The EP finds Ms. Winston having a go at covers of Teddybears, The Stones and our dudes Mumford & Sons, but our favorite is her take on Jack Penate's "Pull My Heart Away". It's make up somehow equal parts sprightly and haunting, it was one of the first tracks we ever heard from Alex and was the first clue that the The Knocks had found something special once again. It's no secret we love Penguin Prison here at Neon Gold, as everything from his original material to his remix work never ceases to astonish us. Tonight we've got an exclusive offering in the form of the latter, his unreal remix of Jack Penate's "So Near", which might just be our favorite rework from him since that initial Marina remix he dropped for us when we first hit him up last spring. From the moment that ominous windswept intro kicks in to its epic synth-laden conclusion we're 100% smitten, and we very much hope you'll feel the same way. Dude is like a pyromaniac the way he's constantly lighting up the remix scene. For. Real.

TONIGHT JUST BECAME THIS MORNING.

I was never overly fond of Jack Penate's fresh-faced guitar sounds, but after initially hailing him as their new wonder boy, the alarming swiftness with which the UK music industry and press seemed to turn their collective back on the young troubadour was staggering to say the least. Penate could have easily put his tail between his legs and wandered off into obscurity in the aftermath, but instead he's resurfaced with one of the most impressive comeback singles we've heard in ages. Teaming up with the one and only Paul Epworth is one way to get your name back in the headlines, but it doesn't mean shit if you haven't got the goods to back it up. On "Tonight's Today" Penate's penned a classic pop song set to the dreamy backdrop of Epworth's nigh-on balearic production, the result an ethereal that takes us far away from the dreamy context of the present as our thoughts drift towards greener pastures and carefree pursuits. Perfect for watching the world wake up around you as you waltz home in the predawn twilight.
